We were pleasantly surprised that the batteries are actually included, so it worked right out of the box. The wooden surface turning into a pixelated display is such a clever touch that even my older kid gets curious about the music modes.

My toddler keeps pressing the buttons to cycle through the animal sounds and melodies, and the pixelate wooden board is perfect for his little fingers to poke at. He's been entertained for a solid twenty minutes straight, which is basically a miracle at this age.

Batteries were included, which saved me a trip to the store, and my toddler loves switching between the animal and melody modes. The wooden pixel surface is a nice tactile change from plastic blocks.
